Deforestation Uses up 13% of Forest

665,945 square kilometers were wiped out because farmers were developing cattle pastures and soybean farms. Logging has also been part of the problem in destroying the forest. This 13% is equal in size to Italy and German together.

CSN Having Problems with Takeover

A bidding war for the Corus Group took a new turn when CSN faced a dispute with respect to its capacity to supply iron ore to a steel companny. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce plans to challenge CSN's ability to supply or to Corus. This action has increase the cost of shares over Wednesday's close.

Brazil Joins Canada against U.S.

Brazil, Argentina, Australia and the European Union have teamed up with Canada against the United States claiming illegal government handouts to American corn growers are being done. Canada claimed on January 8 that some $9 billion was paid out by the U.S. annually, unfairly and illegally deflating international corn prices.

Investigators Lay Blame in Crash

One of the worst crashes in Brazils history killed 154 people caused by a midair collision in September. The chief investigator said on Monday that Air traffic controllers share some of the blame for this disaster. As air traffic controllers are military the federal police must submit their findings to military justice officials who will decide about prosecution.

Bank Theft

Nearly 40 robbers tunneled into a Branch of Brazil's central bank in 2005 stealing more than $70 million in cash. Saturday, January 20th, 2007 one of the men accused and awaiting trial was found with his hands and feet bound, his neck broken and down a 75 foot-deep well. He was found in the well with 2 other bodies.
