Sugar cane cutters have rights

Sugar cane workers are not slaves. They are free to come and go, and have the right to join trade unions, says the Brazilian Ambassador, in a letter to the Guardian.

Italian fugitive arrested in Brazil

Militant 1970s leftist Cesare Battist, accused of killings in his native Italy, was tracked down and arrested Sunday. Police tracking a woman bringing Battisti money found the fugitive novelist near Brazil's famed Copacabana Beach.
